MIKE ROONEY, PRINCIPAL - Mr. Rooney is an accomplished executive and entrepreneur with over 37 years of general management and consulting experience primarily in the Real Estate and AEC industries, and in all aspects of the building life-cycle. As a successful real estate developer, Mike has become very proficient at the related legislative processes in the State of Massachusetts and City of Boston including the large project review Article 80 process. Mike is highly regarded in the associated municipal agencies, community groups and labor unions.
During his career, Mike has been directly involved in the investment, management and development of property with a cumulative value over $100M, predominantly in his hometown of South Boston. Currently, Mike is the Principal of JLCD Development LLC, which is the continuation of the real estate investment, development, management and advisory services previously performed under JLC Property Partners, started by Mike in 2006. In addition to his own developments, Mike has been a development consultant in South Boston and has collaborated with prominent developers such as AW Perry, Boston Development Group, and Acorn Holdings to name just a few.
During the last recession, 2009 – 2010, Mike was asked to serve as the SVP and lead corporate marketing and business development functions at a major Environmental, Health & Safety company, through revised strategy and repositioning from core technical real estate services, to include business management consulting services in a broad Sustainability offering, and in various markets including commercial real estate, telecommunications, healthcare, biotech, pharmaceutical, manufacturing and education.
In 2004 – 2006, Mike was EVP of a large Boston-based restaurant group, where he led a high-end $12M mixed-use development in the exclusive Back Bay section of Boston. He also conducted several financial and operations analyses resulting in significant cost savings, revenue increases and productivity gains in the hospitality business.
Previously, Mike was a major investor, board member and ultimately the CEO of a technology start-up in Europe that developed web-based construction project management (early stage ERP) software serving the AEC and Utilities industries. Mike conducted a major revision to the business plan, and led the company through a merger with another European technology company in 2004.
Between 1993 and 2000, Mike successfully raised equity capital for residential investment and development in South Boston resulting in a significant ROI. During that time, Mike managed or developed residential, class “B” office and retail space with a cumulative value over $50M. He also served on the Board of the South Boston Neighborhood Development Corporation assisting the development of the Father Martin Homes and Castle Cove Senior Living Community, among others.
Upon graduation from business school in 1990, Mike managed several consulting engagements for the US Department of Defense and US Department of Transportation while at EG&G Dynatrend, and in a joint effort for the Comerica / Manufacturers Banks merger.
After graduation from engineering school in 1981, Mike worked for General Dynamics as an Industrial Engineer for one year before joining the Stone & Webster Engineering Company (SWEC). At SWEC, Mike was quickly elevated to lead Project Management teams and over 10 years led advanced technology implementations for computer-aided-engineering and design at various power and petrochemical Utility sites in the US, UK and Middle East.
Mike has a BS in Industrial Engineering from Columbia University and an MBA from Harvard Business School. Mike lives in Hingham, Massachusetts with his wife Valerie, and sons Joseph, Luke, Conor and Daniel.
